A Dress for Mum

Another piece exhibited with Thames Valley Contemporary Textiles.  This time we were challenged to recycle or remake a garment inspired by a family member.  I used a favourite family photograph of my mum and dad dressed up before going out for the evening.  I stitched family photographs and negatives to create a patchwork.

The back of the dress was embellished with ghost-like photos transferred onto white fabrics using a heat press. Captured inside the dress is a letter typed on a manual typewriter giving my late mother an update on my life at that point.

My late mother was a seamstresss and I have fond childhood memories of her making tailors tacks on garments.  I used these to secure the ripped up letter on the back of the dress.
