Homeless Quilt

IMG_3896.jpeg

This piece was inspired by an experience between Christmas and New Year in 2019, when I volunteered with the Sewing Team for Crisis.  I spent two days in London in different venues, repairing garments for guests.

It was made even more special because my daughter worked alongside me.

Shortly afterwards I received a letter from Crisis thanking me and stating that, as a team, we had repaired over 700 garments.  This inspired me to make over 700 "houses" for the homeless to hopefully raise awareness of homelessness.  It was due to be exhibited with Thames Valley Contemporary Textiles last August, but was cancelled due to Covid.

The houses were all made using scraps of material and maps. I used both a sewing machine and hand stitching.

We mostly take for granted our home address and the fact we have at our disposal items to make repairs.
